The Grond Chronicles : Reincarnation Part 4 [Dialup; Agony & Ecstasy]
Part 1 of The Grond Chronicles : The Reincarnation, dealt with stripping the body panels and removing the entire drivetrain and engine. Details are here
Part 2 documented the complete engine teardown and looked like a scene out of Chernobyl. Details are here
Part 3 covered the interior demolition. Details are here
Part 4, that you are reading now, will document how to install tubs on a C5 Coupe and a custom 6 point chrome moly roll cage.
Parts 5, 6, 7 etc. I will reveal as time goes on. This project will stretch for several months, therefore please pull up a chair, open a cold one and get comfy.
Some background; "Tubs" are necessary if I want to run 345 or larger tyres without them sticking out beyond the stock bodywork. I want my tyres fully tucked in so I can keep Grond slammed and to maintain the stock look.
I could have just bought the LPE Mini-tubs but chose not to for several reasons. One is cost - LPE charge $900 for their kit. Two is the LPE kit is not wide enough for what I ultimately intend. Three is I wanted to do it myself. The fourth reason will become clear in Part 5
The custom chrome moly 6 point rollcage (from Cajundude) is to save my sorry behind if I should "run out of talent".
So without further ado, here are the pics.
EG
I completed the interior demolition earlier today, so lets get those HVAC vents sealed.
Bought new Diamond and Carbide cutting wheels for my Dremel. My old diamond wheel had seen better days and the carbide wheel will work much better for cutting fibreglass.
Carbide on the left, Diamond on the right
Mid panel speaker enclosures are in the way in the Coupe. This problem does not exist in the FRC, Z06 & Vert.
So it needs to be gently pryed away...
And cut off...

I am trying to keep it to 1 thread per major modification from start to finish. Unfortunately it never quite works out that way and goes way off topic all the time.
Part 1 was the engine removal, Part 2 was the engine tear down, Part 3 was the interior teardown and Part 4 the tubs and rollcage. I don't want to break them up into hundreds of tiny threads as it will make it too hard to have continuity with each major mod.
this current thread is only 6 pages for me - I have my "View" settings at 100 posts per page

Let's get this thing measured out and marked
Measure twice, cut once...
WooHoo!!! How often do you get to cut up a Corvette????
Perfect positioning
This is hot.... OK, I admit it - I have "issues"

I NEED to do this more often!!!
And I hit the line - bonus!!
Safety is important when playing with fibreglass dust... mask was black by the time I was done...

We are not worthy!!! You've really got WAY too much time on your hands.
So when are you moving to the Lone Star State so I can lend a hand?

Some would shy away out of fear. But if you never try, you'll never learn. Ands what the worst that can happen if something gets screwed up... well it'll just have to get fixed.
Have fun...
